About the Book Bus

After 25 years of teaching in various underprivileged schools across the country, Melanie Moore rerouted her career to focus on inspiring a passion for reading by delivering the joy of owning books. Inspired by the book Parnassus on Wheels, she converted her husband’s 1962 VW truck into a mobile bookstore, and The Book Bus was born.  For over 4 years she popped up around Cincinnati, quickly realizing that she wanted to use all the profits to buy new children’s books to benefit low income children.

An article in the March 2021 Costco Connection magazine catapulted The Book Bus into the national scene, and readers from around the country started following the Book Bus social media to receive book recommendations and learn about the deserving children who were receiving free books.  They also started messaging with Melanie to order their own new books.

In November 2022, Melanie opened a brick and mortar store, The Book Bus Depot, in suburban Cincinnati to increase the footprint of her mission.  The store features new and used books for the whole family in a cozy space reminiscent of a vintage bus depot.

The Book Bus Depot is now flourishing as a popular destination for Indie Bookstore lovers from all over the US, and we offer a variety of community events through the store.  There is a special section of highly curated titles from unique UK publishers who specialize in works of under-represented female authors, alongside beautifully covered classics, seasonal specialties, expected current titles, and a surprisingly wonderful selection of used books.  We are completely staffed with volunteers who support the mission and appreciate meeting fellow book-lovers and talking about books.  The Book Bus achieved official 501c3 status in May 2023, and all the profits from the Book Bus Depot go directly to fund the stated mission.  Along with your book and merchandise orders, we accept tax deductible donations to help realize our goals.

As of December 2024, The Book Bus has provided over $318,171 worth of books to deserving children and agencies and hope to continue making such an impact in the future years.

Our Book

Although we are currently fully staffed with in-store volunteers, there are still a lot of ways you can help us.  Please shop the store, donate used books, join the book club, donate cash, tell your friends about our store and our mission, and refer needy schools/community organizations.

Yes, we are!  The Book Bus was awarded 501c3 status in May 2023 and we are registered with the Attorney General in the state of Ohio (EIN 93-1617753). The Book Bus Depot is how we earn the majority of the funds to fuel the mission.

Our mission is to fuel literacy and to create a love of reading with a focus on children with limited resources by gifting new books through local schools and organizations.

We have a 3 member board that makes decisions and manages/audits the finances for this organization.

Yes, of course!  There are several options found under the shop tab in the menu bar.

You can order unique items, featured books, Book Bus merch and gift cards through our square page.

You can order books directly from us by emailing your order to cincybookbus@gmail.com (you will be invoiced) and we will ship them once payment is received.  In addition, you can order any book to be shipped directly to you from  Bookshop.org.  The Book Bus receives a portion of this profit when you order from this link.

Please direct any other questions to cincybookbus@gmail.com.

Yes, we do!  We have limited space for our used book stock so we request that you take care selecting which books to donate to us.

We accept like-new books of all genres from children to adult.

Preferably no more than 5 years old (except classics).

No textbooks, phone books etc.

If you have more than 2 boxes of books, we prefer that you bring them to us on Wednesdays between 11:30-2:30 because our used book team is in house at that time.  Smaller donations are welcome any time the store is open.

If you have books that are more “used” (broken spines, bent pages etc), the Friends of the Library is always happy to accept all types of books.

There is free, on-street parking in front of the Sharonville City Hall, 3 doors south of us (10090 Reading Rd).

Authors need to first stop in and meet with Melanie, the owner (cincybookbus@gmail.com). We can schedule an author event in our space during our open hours.  Author is expected to help promote event to friends and family, and are responsible to bring and sell their own books.

Moonflower Coffee Collection has been next door since winter 2023.   We love having them as neighbors and we frequently co host events, however, they are a separate business and have their own hours.  They have a variety of specialty drinks, some yummy eats, and many wonderful vintage goods.  Please check out www.moonflowercoffeecollective.com or follow them on social media for specifics.

We do not.  As a nonprofit we keep all our costs as low as possible.  However, there are a lot of ways you can get in touch with us!  Have a question about the store, idea for a charitable recipient, you want to order a book or something else on your mind?  Email cincybookbus@gmail.com or message through the Instagram or FB pages.

The Book Bus is a non profit bookstore that is run by volunteers.  This keeps overhead low so we are able to purchase and donate more books to fuel children’s literacy.
